-Reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) malfunctions,
allowing the contents of the stomach to flow backwards into the esophagus.
Normally, the LES opens to allow food into the stomach; then it closes
immediately to prevent that food and digestive secretions from entering the
esophagus. In GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disorder), the LES malfunctions,
staying open after food has entered the stomach. So, LES weakness causes GERD.
But what causes the LES to weaken?-
-Chronic constipation is the top gastrointestinal complaint in the United
States. ...Studies suggest that constipation may indirectly cause estrogen to be
reabsorbed. With slow transit times, a low-fiber diet and low concentrations of
bacteria, there will be resorption of estrogen. Elevated estrogen can give rise
