What is
Alpha-GPC ?
Alpha-GPC or L-Alpha
Glycerylphosphorylcholine is a phospholipid precursor and metabolite
that comes
from soy lecithin. Alpha-GPC has been proven to multiply the effects of
the
growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) and also increases the
secretion of growth
hormone (hGh) from the pituitary gland in young and old patients. When
the
pituitary gland begins releasing less hGh due to age or stress, this
can lessen
your quality of life. Human growth hormone deficiency can decrease your
lifespan, sexual desire and potency, and can cause muscles to lose mass
and
tone. Growth hormone deficiency can also be linked to increased
body-fat
percentage, mood changes and swings, abnormal sleep patterns, energy
loss, and
decreased immune system function.
Alpha-GPC
has also been shown to improve
mental focus and cognitive function by stimulating the cholinergic
neurotransmitter system. Alpha-GPC is
able to do this by raising the acetylcholine levels in the brain and
central
nervous system. Acetylcholine is an essential nerve messenger molecule,
or
neurotransmitter. As the brain ages the deficiency of acetylcholine
negatively
affects the brain’s cognitive and focus abilities.
Alpha-GPC has also been shown to
increase
strength in workouts because it acts as a precursor for Acetylcholine.
As a
result of this Alpha-GPC then activates cholinergic transmission which
allows
for more strength from workouts, and also reduces somatostatin in the
hypothalamic-pituitary
axis.
Increase in hGh (Human Growth Hormone)<>
In one study
Alpha-GPC was
administered to young and old human volunteers in order to learn what
effects
supplementation would have. Naturally, the secretion of growth hormone
in the
younger subjects was greater than in the older. Subjects who were
administered
growth hormone and alpha-GPC experienced a greater response than those
that
were only administered growth hormone. The study also found that the
elderly
subjects increased their growth hormone secretion more so than the
younger
subjects. This study also went a long way to support the fact that
younger
individuals are less responsive to growth hormone supplementation.
Improve
mental focus and cognitive function
In one study 126
patients
suffering from senile dementia caused by Alzheimer’s were administered
alpha
GPC. The patients that were supplemented the alpha-GPC showed vast
improvements
in most neuropsychological parameters. In
thirteen published clinical trials 4054
patients were studied in order to determine the effects of alpha-GPC
administration. Most of the studies that were conducted were on
patients
experiencing different
forms of dementia; including, senile dementia
from Alzheimer’s, and vascular dementia, and those with acute
cerebrovascular
diseases, such as; transitory ischemic attack and stroke. In all of
these
studies the administration of alpha-GPC was shown to significantly
improve the
patient’s clinical condition.
What happens if you don't have enough
Choline ?
Deficiencies in
acetylcholine can cause the body to break down phosphatidylcholine for
its choline content, leading to the death of brain cells. Yet in
controlled clinical trials of middle-aged subjects taking GPC, reaction
time was enhanced and there was improved energy generation and
electrical coordination in the brain. For older subjects, double-blind
trials demonstrated that GPC had superior benefits over certain other
brain nutrients for mental focus, recall, verbal fluency—a unique,
marked overall enhancement of mental performance. GPC is an example of
what the great Linus Pauling referred to as “orthomolecules,” that is,
molecules that are “orthodox” or “correct” for the body. GPC excels as
a protective nutraceutical for memory loss and mood enhancement. It
protects cells of the brain (and other organs) from damage, shielding a
range of important biomolecules against toxin build-up.
How to Take it ?
It is suggested to
take 500mg 2-3 times a day. If one is taking other nootropics
like Piracetam, then that 500mg can be taken 4-6 times a day.
